  • Sweet Vermouth : 1 oz
  • Maraschino Cherry : 1

Recipe Instructions

Start by chilling your cocktail glass with some ice and water.

While letting that sit, combine your spirits and ample ice in a large mixing glass. Stir, don't shake, until the glass begins to cloud.

Empty the ice from your cocktail glass, strain into it, and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

As your friend and loving bartender, I can tell you without question that this is my favorite cocktail in the world. Let's run through the praises: It's old, it's cleverly named, it looks vaguely like sewage runoff, and it's absolutely delicious.

A close relative of the Martinez, the Bijou was first spotted in Harry Johnson's 1900 "New and Improved Bartender Manual."

The Bijou, meaning "jewel" in French, combines the colors of three jewels: gin for diamond, vermouth for ruby, and chartreuse for emerald.
